Many U.S. local and state agencies provide crisis hotlines, counseling, legal referrals and advocacy,
and operate community education programs. If they don't have TTY's they can be contacted through a
relay operator (711) in the U.S. or by fax or e-mail. They are usually listed in the phone directory under government
agencies or social services.
If you contact a crisis hotline, here are some things they may be able to help you with:Crisis CounselingSafety Planning Information and Referral Court Accompaniment Legal Advocacy Medical Advocacy Shelter Assessment and Intake Temporary Protective Orders Educational Services Parenting and Children's programs Psychotherapy Services Shelter Services are legally required to provide interpreters, but sadly they don't always know this, and they often don't have interpreters who are immediately available. They don't usually have TTYs, flashing lights or other essential accommodations so Deaf women can communicate clearly about important issues, feel they are safe, included, and they are not alone. But they do provide important services in times of crisis. Womens' Shelters can provide:Basic Needs and SafetyAdvocacy / Case Management Court Accompaniment Counseling Information and Referral Children's Programs Life Skills Workshops All crisis hotlines are accessible through relay services (711) in the U.S., but here are a few you can reach directly by TTY: ADWAS - Abused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services 8623 Roosevelt Way NE Seattle WA 98115 (TTY ONLY): Business Office Phone 206-726-0093 (TTY ONLY): 24-hour Sexual Assault Crisis Line: (206) 236-3134 (TTY ONLY): 24-hour Domestic Violence Crisis Line: (206) 236-3134 (TTY ONLY): 24-hour National Domestic Violence Hotline 1(800)787-3224 FAX: 206-726-0017 E-Mail: adwas@adwas.org Website: www.adwas.org Since 1986 ADWAS (the first agency of its kind) has been providing services for Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Seattle/King County and South Snohomish County areas of Western Washington.
